Every day, it seems there’s yet another post circulating about the desire to enter the Modern format without resorting to extreme financial measures. Despite the loud voices in the community, including my own, it’s important to recognize that Modern remains vibrant, with numerous local game stores hosting regular events. However, as the format gains more attention and the staple cards age, entering becomes increasingly challenging.
Over the years, seasoned Modern players have often recommended a few go-to decks for newcomers, ranging from Burn to Prowess, and yes, Burn again. However, for those seeking a deck with a bit more impact than casting Lightning Bolt, there’s an alternative. Thanks to a substantial influx of reprints and changes to the banned list in recent years, the cost of Mono-Green Tron has significantly decreased, while its competitive viability remains intact.
Today, we’re revisiting our original budget list from a couple of years ago, adapting it to reflect the version of the deck that achieved considerable success at the last Modern Pro Tour. While I won’t delve into a step-by-step guide this time, as it’s been covered previously, you can refer back to the original breakdown if you missed it.
What exactly is Tron? In a nutshell, Tron represents Modern’s archetypal ramp strategy. Its game plan revolves around generating significant mana, deploying imposing threats, and ultimately seizing victory. The initial phases involve assembling the “UrzaTron” – consisting of Urza’s Tower, Urza’s Mine, and Urza’s Power Plant – typically achieved by the third turn to produce a whopping seven colorless mana.
Traditionally, this mana was funneled into Karn Liberated, once hailed as the unrivaled powerhouse of colorless spells. While Karn remains a formidable inclusion, the landscape has shifted, prompting the exploration of alternative.
Below are some of the cards highlighted and to be considered Best Budget List MTG Cards.
Lightning Bolt
Urza’s Tower
Urza’s Mine
Urza’s Power Plant
Karn Liberated
One of the most significant enhancements to Tron in recent years comes in the form of Karn, the Great Creator. This card seamlessly blends a formidable static prison effect with an extensive toolbox, granting the deck access to a diverse array of potent solutions straight from the main deck. The capacity to swiftly retrieve and deploy the necessary tools to impede the opponent’s progress is immensely powerful, enabling the deck to contend with the contemporary threats prevalent in today’s Modern landscape. Remarkably, despite the core structure of the deck remaining largely unchanged for over a decade, Karn’s inclusion has revitalized Tron’s adaptability and competitiveness.
Karn, the Great Creator
Tron has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the Modern format and shows no signs of fading into obscurity any time soon. With its unparalleled adaptability and capacity to outscale any opposing deck, Tron remains a favored strategy among those with a penchant for the unconventional and strategic complexity. Remarkably, its accessibility offers an enticing entry point into a format that grows increasingly challenging to penetrate.
If the aggressive tactics of burning adversaries alive don’t quite resonate with you, perhaps the gradual, methodical pressure exerted by Tron will prove more appealing, drawing you into the diverse realm of Modern gameplay. Until our paths cross again, remember to prioritize safety, employ strategic acumen, and thank you for your readership.
Happy gaming!
